Imagination is such a wonderful thing. My children could play and amuse themselves for hours with nothing more then a cardboard box, a few scraps of paper and some crayons. I am always looking for ways to encourage my kids to use their imaginations, and it doesn’t hurt when I find a product that also helps with basic skills and concepts!
The Land of Me does that plus lots more.
The Land of Me is a magical picture book world full of stunning locations and mysterious characters where changing the words on the page can have dramatic results. Children follow the adventures of Eric the raccoon, Buddy Boo the bear and Willow the owl as they explore The Land of Me and play all kinds of games. Children can create monsters, build castles, choreograph dance, compose music and tell stories.
When the DVD-ROM arrived, both V and I were very excited to check it out. It was very quick and easy to install The Land of Me, and even easier for V to navigate and use the game without much help from me. She loves how all of the characters talk – their accents are very new to her and they really captured her interest. She had so much fun going through all of the levels, and kept going back to “visit” her favorites – Granny Olive and Mr. Rigby.
E was very interested in watching her play, and he liked Yama-San and the “monsters”. V helped him play by letting him say yes or no to the choices, and he was very excited to see the final outcome.
When E went down for his nap, I sat down to play with V. I love that there are questions and prompts to get your child talking and thinking about what else may be going on with the characters, how they are feeling and what you think they should do next. In addition to helping your child use and build their imagination, they are also learning computer skills, and practicing their color recognition, shapes, sizes, rhyming and more.
I was also very impressed with the design of the game, and how much fun the map was both on the screen and the paper copy that came with it. The tiny foot prints that appear on the map as the characters are exploring are very cute, and did not go unnoticed by either of the kids. V was super excited by them and I was impressed that such a small yet interesting and fun detail was included.
The music is fun and upbeat, and my personal favorite places were with the family of otters – the dancing was so cute – and with Bernard … his singing was fantastic!
This game is fun in front of the computer and away from it. V has been using the map to go on her own adventures both inside and outside, and there are tons of activities that can be printed out right from the game and a free activity section found on The Land of Me blog.
You can buy all 6 chapters plus activity books directly from The Land of Me web store.
