When V was a toddler, I took her to mommy and me sign language classes. She LOVED them, and I was surprised by how much she learned. She would sign non-stop through out the day, and it really helped when she ready to speak – she had a great vocabulary and would fill in the words she didn’t know how to say with sign. Fast forward a few years, and V still signs on occasion. She had a blast teaching her little brother some basic signs, and kept asking me to show her more.
A few months ago I was very fortunate to be able to review a DVD by Signing Families. V was once again excited by sign, and once again asking me to show her more. When we had the chance to check out the brand new online classes offered by Signing Families, I knew that this was what we had been looking for. These classes are specifically designed for children 4 and up, so they were made to be easy to follow and understand.
The first thing that I really liked about the online classes is that they are short – perfect for a young child’s attention span. I love that she can watch it over and over again (which she has!). But my favorite part is that they feature other kids teaching and doing the signs.V could totally relate, and was eager to copy the elementary aged instructor.
We had the chance to check out the “Just For Kids! – School Signs” video. It was great. With V starting Kindergarten this fall, I knew that she would be interested in learning these signs. This video also offered a bonus at the end – they showed how to sign all the letters of the alphabet!
V has been watching and practicing these signs nonstop. She has also been teaching her little brother some of the signs. He isn’t as quick to pick them up as she is, but he really likes “practicing” with her. Her favorite things to sign are “teacher”, “hello” and “name” which she follows with a “V”.
These classes are super affordable, and definitely worth every penny. In addition to the new online classes, Signing Families also offers a great selection of signing products to help teach your child. I love the video; it is geared towards parents – which I think is awesome! They also have reference cards, a book that can be personalized, bookmarks, folders, and much more.

Thanks for sharing.I’m going to hop back to enter this giveaway as my dottie’s Preschool teacher taught them to sign the last academic year and she loved it. I’d love to learn along with her so this DVD would be great.
The DVD is fantastic. It is unique in that it teaches the parent (or teacher) so that they can be the ones teaching the child. It is straight forward and isn’t filled with cartoon characters and tons of fluff – which I really liked and appreciated. It is great tool.
This is such excellent information! Honestly lately I have thought how great it would be to learn how to sign. My son had to take it his senior year because he couldn’t seem to pass Spanish Or French…and I thought this was such a great alternative. I will be checking them out because if they can teach a 4 year old-why not a 42 year old?

Becky, I have taken sign language classes in college, and I still learn with my daughter when we watch these! You should definitely check them out – it really is a lot of fun, plus it is great to know. I sign to my kids when we are out sometimes. It is nice to be able to ask them to stop their behavior without attracting much attention. They see me sign “no” or “stop” and will usually stop what they are doing. It has been great.
