How My Life Was Affected By Breast Cancer

When I was about 15 years old, my step mom was diagnosed and underwent treatment for breast cancer.

12 years later, and it still gives me lots of perspective, and much to reflect on.

As a teenager, I lived in a bubble : one where I was invincible, and no one that I loved could be hurt or effected by sickness. I was aware of breast cancer, I had learned about it in health class, and I knew that it was very serious … I just never thought that I would personally know anyone effected by it.

When my step mom went through treatment, which included a mastectomy… It was very hard on her and my dad. I didn’t live with them so I honestly didn’t experience much that she was going through first hand, but I did see how worried my dad was and how he was concerned about her and how she was feeling/doing.

While I may not have been a part of her day to day struggles with breast cancer, it was a huge eye opener for me. I learned first hand that you have to be proactive when it comes to your health. Self breast exams and yearly visits to the doctor quickly became a priority in my life where it had not been before.

Thankfully, my step mom beat breast cancer. She has been healthy and cancer for 12+ years now, and she is truly inspiring!

I have learned as much as I can about early detection, and what can be done to help with breast cancer research and treatment. This is knowledge that I will pass onto my children as they grow up, and I hope that they will continue to learn as much as they can.

Making Strides Against Breast Cancer is the American Cancer Society’s nationwide series of walking events to raise funds and awareness to end breast cancer.
