Get Cooking! With Mama Doni Cookbook {review}

I love any reason to get into the kitchen and cook. My kids are always excited to pull up a chair and join me. Over the years, I have found that by letting them cook with me, they actually try tons of foods they wouldn’t eat otherwise. They want to taste what they have worked so hard to create.

For this reason, I like to have them cook fun things with me that I know they will like, and a few things that they have never tried. 9 times out of 10, they find that they like these unknown items … even when it is something they refused to try in the past.

One of our newest cookbooks that we have been really liking is Get Cooking! A Jewish American Family Cookbook.

There are so many things that I really like about the cookbook — from the recipes themselves, to the great pictures and super fun CD that is included, my kids love it as well.

I have never made many of the recipes, so it was interesting for all of us to try some new foods together. I was most excited to try Mama Doni’s Classic Challah bread recipe — I have never had Challah bread, but I always heard that is was really good … especially for making french toast the next day! I can tell you this much — I wish I would’ve tried it sooner!! It was so good.

The kids have helped me make bread in the past, but we usually just stick it in a loaf pan. V really liked helping me braid the pieces together, and E was great at brushing it with the egg wash – something else that we haven’t done on any bread before.

We also really liked the Warm Brownie Pudding Cake (YUM!!!!), the Jelly Donut Miracle Muffincakes (new FAVORITE of mine — and saves me a trip to the donut shop for the kids), the Pizza Fondue, and I was super surprised that the kids liked the Holy Moly Guacamole! recipe because they would never eat it how I made it before.

We are excited to try some of the other recipes in the coming weeks … I cannot wait to try the Year-Round Flourless Chocolate Cake!

It has really been a lot of fun trying new recipes and learning more about the Jewish/American culture. Each section, and many of the recipes, have family and cultural stories attached to them making it a book that you actually want to sit down and read through and not just cook from.

The kids also really enjoyed the CD. We listened to it while making some of our treats, and even referenced to the song lyrics within the cookbook. Plus I like that there is a spot to store the CD right in the book, making it easy to combine cooking and music – two things that I love to do anyways!

This cookbook is a must have for any family that loves to cook together (or those that have never done that but want to).
