Not too long ago, I was reminiscing on facebook about pen pals. When I was younger, I had a pen pal from England, and I thought it was the coolest thing ever. We wrote back and forth for almost three years – exchanged birthday and Christmas gifts, and learned a lot about each other. It was an amazing experience.

I was recently wondering if people still have pen pals. With everything being online and so fast paced nowadays, I didn’t know if kids still took the time to write each other letters… or if texting was where the written communication ended.

I was pleasantly surprised to have the chance to check out Pen Pal Kids Club with my daughter.

Yes, it is a little different from having a traditional pen and paper pen pal, but it is the perfect compromise for the busy world that we live in today.

Kids ages 4-14 can set up an account {that parents can view at any time} and they can connect with other kids their age and with similar interests from across the United States and around the world.

It only took a few minutes to set up V’s profile – she picked a user name, styled her avatar, and selected her favorite subject, food, and a few other interests. These help other kids find new friends with similar interests.

One thing that I noticed was there is no place to enter your age. This is a good and a bad thing. I want V to be able to talk to kids her own age, so I emailed the company to ask if I was just missing this information. I was very impressed with how quickly they got back to me. In just a few hours time, I had my response. At this time, there is no way to tell how old a user is.

While I was a little bummed, he did tell me that he knew of two kids that were both 6 years old because they had announced in their posts. V has asked both to be her pal.

I am so excited to really dig deeper into this page with V. I know that she is going to love having friends online and getting digital post cards/letters from them. Plus it is a great way for her to work on her spelling and reading.
