A few years ago, I would have laughed at the thought of video chatting with my mom. She was more than a little bit technically challenged (sorry mom, but it’s true!) but within the past few months, she has really been getting her tech on.. starting with a new computer and iPhone.

Next on the list for her … Skype of course!

If you are not familiar with Skype then you have come to the right place! I am so excited to announce that for the next few months I will be working as a Skype Ambassador … Which means that I will be able to share tons of tips and ideas for using Skype, as well as some personal stories which are sure to be entertaining.

If you are familiar with Skype, I can’t wait to hear about your experience with it – any funny stories, mishaps, memorable moments, and of course about your first time using video chat.

I love that Skype gives you the ability to have a face to face conversation with loved ones, friends and business associates even when you are miles and miles apart. While I primarily use Skype for business calls/meetings, I do have a few long distance friends and family members that I love to video chat with. My sister lives down south and only visits once every 5-10 years, so it is the perfect way for us to keep in touch and “see” each other.

Better Than A Traditional Land Line?

Since I have been using Skype, Jay and I have decided that we don’t need a land line. The computer is always on, and I have the Skype app on my cell phone. It is much more cost efficient for us to use Skype credits with a dedicated phone number then to pay a monthly land line fee.

Plus, Skype offers so many options! You can video chat, voice chat, place calls to land lines and cell phones, send SMS messages, and even set up a voice mail account. Video calls and voice calls to Skype members are free, and the rates are very low for their “traditional” phone features and group chat. I love that you have the option to either purchase a plan, a subscription or pay-per-use.

Mom You Rock

Just in time for Mother’s Day, you can head over to the Mom You Rock Skype Facebook page and create your own awesome video to send your mom!

My mom and I aren’t going to be able to get together this weekend for Mother’s Day. My kids are planning a super special day for me, and my mom has a lot going on, so we have decided to get together the following weekend instead. But I still want to let her know that I am thinking about her and how much I love and appreciate her on Mother’s Day.

Skype video chatting, and the Mom You Rock video that I quickly and easily made for her, is the perfect way to say “Happy Mother’s Day” when I can’t be there this weekend.

I posted my video to her Facebook wall, and it honestly took me about 2 minutes to create. I picked the song I liked and had the option to sing along and change the messages on the note cards at the end. I opted to just use a photo of myself because I am feeling a bit under the weather today and do not want to be recorded at this moment.

For ever Mom You Rock video that is created, Skype is donating $1 to the Save the Children’s Global Action Fund in support of the new MomsTheWord.org campaign! So take a minute and create a video – you mom will love it, and you will be supporting a great cause.

More Personal Then a Card or Traditional Phone Call

It takes the same amount of time to place a video chat call with Skype as it does to make a regular phone call. Video chatting is so much more fun, personal, and special then just a regular card or phone call. The face to face aspect makes your birthday/holiday message that much more memorable for you both.

This will be my mom’s first time doing a video chat, and I know she is going to love it.
