I love my animals. They truly are members of the family, and are treated as such all the time. They get to celebrate their birthdays and Christmas along with the rest of us, and they always have gifts to open (which the kids love to help pick out and open) and enjoy. While we do have a big pet center near our house, I prefer to get most of my pets treats and toys right at my local Wal-Mart.

Wal-Mart really does offer something for everyone in the family, and our Super Wal-Mart is no slacker! With four full isles of doggie items, plus tons of promotional bins for the holidays, I knew that I would be able to make the perfect gift basket for my special puppy this year.

As some of you know, we adopted a puppy this summer. Jasper is now a year old (as of November) and really thriving. He is a completely different puppy from the one we brought home. No longer timid and afraid of everything, he is outgoing, happy, and loves to be part of the action. He is never far from one of the kids, and often goes into sleep with them at night. I wanted this holiday to be extra special for him, and for us!

Little Man was my shopping partner for this trip, and he was very excited to be my helper! He gave either a “yes” or a “no” to all the toys that we looked at, and together we picked out some really great items.

While I was shopping, I was thinking about all the things that you need for a new puppy when you first bring them home. Some of my must haves include great toys – we picked out a dental toy, a tug toy and a neat fetch toy. Because it was so close to the holidays, some of their regular toys were out of stock, but they definitely made up for it with all of the extra bins of holiday toys!

You also need treats. Treats are great for teaching your new puppy their name, tricks, rewarding acceptable behavior, house training and so much more. We worked hard to teach Jasper to stay in the yard when it was time to “potty outside” and he got many treats while he was learning this! It definitely encouraged him to keep it up.

We purchased 4 bags of treats for our gift basket: a box of Milk-Bone® Healthy Favorites, two kinds of Milo’s Kitchen Treats, and a bag of original flavor Pup-Peroni Treats. These treats are all pretty regular in our house, and my puppy is always excited to see the bags.

We also checked out the dog beds, food and water dishes and travel crates (which looked great!). I picked up a brush to include in our gift basket, and debated on the travel crate or a bed, but opted to wait as we are hoping to be moving soon and I am trying to not make any space consuming purchases until then.

I did pick up a few things for dinner while we were at the store, and then came my least favorite part of any Wal-Mart shop — checking out. My Wal-Mart never has enough checkout lines open, and this day it was no exception. The store was so busy (we were there 2 days before Christmas!) and there were only 8 lanes open. Needless to say, we waited in line for a while!

Now that you have seen all of the goodies we brought home, make sure to check out the post next week to see our finished gift basket! It came out beautifully if I do say so myself!

You can also see all of the pictures from our trip in my Google+ album.
