Shara Lawrence-Weiss, the fabulous lady behind Mommy Perks, has written a fantastic post that combines honoring Memorial Day with teaching your child memory skills, new vocabulary words, and providing spelling practice! I greatly enjoy reading Shara’s creative, sometimes out of the box, way of thinking and approach to parenting, and I have found many new projects to do with my kids, as well as new ways to approach both tricky and everyday situations that all parents face. In addition to her being a wonderful parenting resource, she is also a great resource for small businesses and social media.

Memorial Day Word Game: teach spelling + communication!

The website offers 5,000+ free printouts for parents and teachers. Paying members have access to 38,000+ printouts, clip art images and craft ideas.

There are numerous Memorial Day printouts at I found the Memorial Day Word Wall today and printed out two copies.  I don’t currently work in a classroom so I don’t need the words for a Word Wall. I can, however, use the words to make our own match-up game!

We cut the words so that each one was about the same size:

I then laminated the words:

I cut down each word, once laminated, and then rounded the corners with my corner rounder. You can also use scissors to round the corners (so that the lamination is not sharp for the kids):

We sorted the words on the floor:

Then we began to play:

My daughter found the first matching pair. She wasn’t at all thrilled about that; can you tell?

Our friend found the most words, though!

We chatted about the words, the meanings of the words and of course…the game reinforced the spellings (which both children needed). This game could easily be played at home or in the classroom.

*Substitute contact paper for lamination, if you don’t have a laminating machine. It won’t last as long but it will work for a short while.

Happy Memorial Day!
