My 4 year old is a free spirit, to say the least. While I love her independence and willfulness, I would also love for her to listen, follow rules, and complete her chores without a major fight. I have tried many different tactics, none of which have been overly successful. Well, I think that I have found one that we will be able to stick with! The Good Girls chart from Organize it Mom is a lifesaver!

The Good Girls Chart is a racetrack, with 16 available spots, a trophy at the end, and three flags along the way. You can really set the chart up however you would like. I decided to place all the behaviors that I would like Violet to display on the flags (Eating each meal, making her bed, brushing her teeth, getting dressed, helping mom, etc) and the behaviors that I was proud she made it to the end without displaying (Our trophy says things like: NO naughty words, no talking back, no whining, etc). Each time she does one of her flag milestones, she gets to move a space or two depending upon the task.

Moving her car into the final square!

The first few days, I did not implement moving BACK spaces for not listening, talking back, whining, etc, because I wanted her to be very excited to make it to the end and chose a reward (extra bedtime book, game night, movie). She was thrilled the first few night when she easily made it to the end. I then told her that if she got in trouble, she would loose some of her squares. She was horrified to say the least. This has been a gentle reminder to keep her headed in the right direction – it is no fun to not make it to the end (as she unfortunately found out early this week).

Very proud that she made it to the trophy! It was a good day for all!!

I also decided to number the squares, so not only is it reinforcing positive behavior, but it is helping her with counting and number recognition!

We have been using this chart for over two weeks now, and I am very happy with the results! Violet knows now what she is expected to do each day, and really thrives at having a goal to work towards – getting to the trophy and picking her reward. I like that we can see her progress and talk about what she is doing good; it is nice to not just focus on the negative behavior that we would like to change.
